Box Score 2 Redlands, Calif. - Freshmen pitchers Eden Griffen and Bianca Cockrell had solid starts, but the Redlands Softball team was able to outduel them to sweep the Sagehens 1-0 and 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
With the losses, the Sagehens slip to 6-25 overall and 3-17 in SCIAC play. Redlands improves to 23-7 and 19-1 in conference play.
Griffen (pictured) allowed just one unearned run in the first inning of the opening game, but Kaitlyn Hooper threw a four-hit shutout to make that run stand up. The Sagehens scored a run in the second game to cut the lead to 2-1 in the fourth, as Caitlyn Hynes, Lauren Boden and Sofia Baig strung together singles and Lindsay McCord scored Hynes with a bases loaded walk.
However, Lauren Henson got out of the jam with no further damage, and Casey Maltz came through for Redlands with a two-run single with two outs in the sixth to make the score 4-1. It was only the third hit allowed for Cockrell, who allowed a leadoff triple to start the game and then did not allow another hit until the sixth.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next Saturday for a road doubleheader against Whittier at 12 p.m.
