Softball Falls In Extra Innings In Season Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team celebrated Senior Day for its regular season finale on Saturday, but La Verne spoiled the festivities by winning 6-3 in the opener and 6-1 in nine innings in the nightcap.

With the losses, the Sagehens finish the year 9-30 overall and 6-22 in the SCIAC, while La Verne closes out its season 20-20 overall and 14-14 in league play.

Pomona-Pitzer honored its four seniors prior to the game, including three-time All-SCIAC first baseman/utility player Caityln Hynes (pictured) and triplets Allison Boden, Lauren Boden and Stephanie Boden. The Boden's younger sister, sophomore outfielder Susanne Boden, began the opening game at first base as well to give the Sagehens an all-Boden starting infield (Allison at third, Lauren at shortstop, Stephanie at second, and Susanne at first).

The Sagehens trailed 5-0 in the sixth, though, when they were able to string together three runs. Ashley Morello and Meagan Tokunaga drew walks and Hynes lined a single to load the bases (single pictured). Susanne Boden then followed with a double to the left-center field gap to score two runs. After an unsuccessful squeeze play forced Hynes out, Lindsay McCord doubled to make the score 5-3.

La Verne, though, got one of the runs back in the top of the seventh and held on for the 6-3 win. Hynes and Sofia Baig were each 2-for-3 in the opening game.

In the nightcap, Lauren Boden had an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the score 1-1 and force extra innings. Morello had a two-out single, Hynes drew a walk, and Boden singled into left-center to plate Morello with the tying run.

The score held until the ninth, when La Verne was able to break it open with five runs, capped off by a two-run homer by Alexix Schiff, who was 5-for-5 in the nightcap. Raeven Freret had an RBI single, and pitcher Katherine Kibbe helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly.

Lauren Boden was 2-for-4 in the nightcap, along with Morello, to account for Pomona-Pitzer's four hits off of Kibbe. Sagehen starter Eden Griffen did not allow an earned run until the ninth inning, but took the tough luck loss.
