Sagehens Fall In Doubleheader To CMS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Softball team lost a pitcher's duel 2-0 in the first game and dropped a 9-1 decision in the nightcap as CMS was able to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday.

With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 1-16 overall and 1-11 in the SCIAC, while CMS improves to 7-6 overall (7-1 since an 0-5 start) and 7-3 in the SCIAC with the wins.

CMS scored twice in the first game in the opening inning as Alexa Heydenberk led off with a double and Tara Robinson's ensuing sacrifice bunt turned into a hit with two errors allowing Heydenberk to score and Robinson to move into second. After a single put runners on the corners, Katie Savard put down a sacrifice bunt on a safety squeeze to make the score 2-0.

The score would remain stuck on 2-0 the rest of the way, as Hayley Schultz threw a four-hit shutout and Bianca Cockrell matched her zero for zero until the seventh.

The Sagehens fell behind 2-0 again in the nightcap, but got one run back as Caitlyn Hynes led off the second with a double down the left field line, and two batters later, came home from third on a double from Meagan Tokunaga.

However, Savard hit a solo homer in the third and the Athenas tacked on six runs in the fourth to make the score 9-1 and shorten the game to five innings. Savard (3-for-4, 4 RBI in nightcap) had a two-run single in the inning and Carlene Roberts added a two-run double.

A bright spot for the Sagehens was the defensive play of freshman left fielder Sofia Baig (pictured). Baig made a running catch in the gap in the opener to keep the score 2-0 and then added a diving catch of the grasstops. She then threw out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double by chasing a ball down in foul territory, and made a pair of difficult twisting catches on deep fly balls in front of the fence.

Pomona-Pitzer is back in action this week at the Tucson Invitational, where it will face Grinnell, Denison, Central College and Gustavus Adolphus on Thursday and Friday.
