Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Allie Frappier had 20 kills and the Sagehen defense combined for 12 blocks as the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team clinched a bid to the 2014 SCIAC Postseason Tournament with a 3-0 win over Chapman on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-18, 25-23 with the Sagehens getting the final two points after Chapman had tied the third set 23-23. With the win, Pomona-Pitzer is now 17-9 overall and 9-5 in the SCIAC, securing the fourth seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament. Chapman, which could have kept its hopes alive with a win, falls to 7-17 overall and 6-8 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Senior Samantha Cahill (pictured, right) had seven block assists to lead the defensive effort, while sophomore Kelli Derrah (pictured, left) and senior Kirea Mazzolini each had five. Junior libero Michelle Schultz also had a match-high 25 digs.
Pomona-Pitzer appeared to be on its way to an easy win by jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the first set, before winning 25-16. The Sagehens had seven blocks in the first set alone, forcing Chapman into 14 errors overall and a -.064 hitting percentage.
The second two sets were tougher, though, as Pomona-Pitzer used a 7-0 run to turn a narrow 17-16 lead into a 24-16 edge in the second set, before winning 25-18 on a kill from senior Ellen Yamasaki. The third set saw the Sagehens take a 17-10 lead, but Chapman came all the way back to tie it 23-23 on a service ace that hit the tape and fell over.
The final two points went Pomona-Pitzer's way, though, as Frappier had a kill to give the Sagehens the lead, and sophomore Sarah Gamble finished it off with a kill.
Pomona-Pitzer closes out the regular season with a road match at Caltech on Friday, followed by a home contest against La Verne on Saturday at 1 p.m. The La Verne match will be Senior Day, as the Sagehens will honor Frappier, Cahill, Mazzolini, Yamasaki and Dani Kritter prior to the match.
