Box Score Redlands, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team dropped the first set, but regrouped and took the final three sets for a 3-1 road win over Redlands on Saturday evening.
Set scores were 20-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 as the Sagehens scored the final seven points of the match to improve to 16-9 overall and 8-5 in the SCIAC, putting them in position to clinch a SCIAC Tournament bid with a win over Chapman in their next match on Tuesday. Redlands falls to 2-18 overall and 2-13 in the SCIAC with the loss.
Senior All-American Allie Frappier (pictured) matched her season high with 32 kills and also added 23 digs for Pomona-Pitzer. Senior Samantha Cahill added eight kills in 17 attempts, senior Kirea Mazzolini had five blocks (one solo) and junior libero Michelle Schultz had 24 digs. Sophomore setter Elizabeth Sun had 24 assists and freshman setter Jessica Finn added 23.
The Sagehens got off to a sluggish start and trailed 9-1 in the opening set, eventually falling 25-20. Down 10-9 in the second set, Pomona-Pitzer seized momentum with a 6-0 run, including two kills from Frappier. Back-to-back kills from Cahill finished off the set at 25-18.
The third set was tight at 15-14, but the Sagehens closed it out on a 10-3 run. Sophomore Samantha Quesada-Diaz had back-to-back kills to push the lead to 22-16, and kills from Cahill and sophomore Kelli Derrah finished the set off.
Redlands appeared poised to force a fifth set with a 21-18 lead, but the Sagehens stormed back on a 7-0 run to close out the set and the match. The final three points after Pomona-Pitzer took a 22-21 lead were all Frappier kills off assists from Finn.
Pomona-Pitzer is now in fourth place in the SCIAC at 8-5 with a two-game lead on Chapman at 6-7 in fifth place. A win on Tuesday in their head-to-head match-up at Voelkel Gymnasium would secure a bid to the four-team SCIAC Tournament for the Sagehens.
