Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Junior midfielder Nicole Quilliam (pictured) scored on a rebound after her own shot hit the post with 2:52 left in regulation as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team opened the year with a 3-3 tie against Concordia (Irvine).
The Sagehens showed impressive resiliency after Concordia had the better of the play in the early going. In fact, the Eagles went ahead 2-0 on goals from Elizabeth Abt and Alexis Garcia-Irons at the 29:05 and 31:18 marks of the first half, before Pomona-Pitzer even took its first shot on net.
However, the first shot resulted in a goal, as freshman Agueda Dudley-Berrios found the back of the net on her first collegiate shot, converting a feed from fellow freshman Danika Bethune with 8:40 left in the first half.
The Sagehens then had their first moment of drama of the night, as sophomore Julia Dohner scored with just seven seconds left in the opening half. Sophomore Mary Stafford set the goal up with a long cross, and Dohner volleyed it in from inside the penalty area to level the score at 2-2 heading into the break.
Concordia seized the advantage back on a penalty kick just 12:47 into the second half, with Carly Mottram converting after the Sagehens were whistled for a foul in the box. The Eagles held that lead almost to the finish line, but senior forward Allie Tao was able to get behind the defense in the game's closing minutes. Quilliam got to the ball in the box and fired a shot off the post, but she followed the ball in and got to the rebound first, tying up the score with just 2:52 left in the game.
The Sagehens dominated the first overtime, with Tao getting a pair of shots off in the first two minutes of the extra session, and sophomore Ying Fry adding another that went wide. Concordia then had the better of the play in the second extra session, outshooting Pomona-Pitzer 3-0, with sophomore goalie Annie Wedel called on to make a save off a corner kick with just under three minutes left.
Wedel finished with five saves for the Sagehens in 110 minutes, four of which came in the first half to keep Pomona-Pitzer close while Concordia held a 10-2 edge in shots. The Eagles ended the day with a 15-10 edge in shots and an 8-4 advantage in corners.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend when it travels to UC Santa Cruz for a pair of games, facing the host Banana Slugs on Friday and Willamette on Sunday.
