Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team was held without a goal for over 16 minutes to fall behind 6-2, and were unable to come all the way back as they fell to Redlands 7-6 on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 10-15 overall and 2-2 in the SCIAC. Redlands improves to 9-15 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC.
Pomona-Pitzer tied the game at 2-2 with 4:36 left in the first quarter on a goal from freshman Katy Schafer (Los Altos, Calif.), but did not score again until 2:46 left in the third quarter on a goal from sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.), snapping a 4-0 Redlands run and making the score 6-3.
The Sagehens crept closer in the fourth quarter, as sophomore Sallie Walecka (Palo Alto, Calif. - pictured) converted to make the score 6-4 with 6:16 left to play, and Woodward then trimmed the lead to one with a man-up goal with 3:26 left.
Haley Hollinrake, though, answered with the eventual game-winner on the next possession, scoring on a blind backhand on a post up that Pomona-Pitzer goalie Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) nearly was able to keep out of the net, but it just trickled past her to make the score 7-5.
Redlands attempted to finish off the clock in the final minute, before sophomore Vicky Gyorffy (Sacramento, Calif.) had a steal and lobbed a shot in from distance with eight seconds left, but Redlands was able to kill the final eight seconds before Pomona-Pitzer could put any pressure on them.
Tuggy finished with nine saves for the Sagehens, while Julie Lupfer had 12 for Redlands (five in the fourth quarter).
Pomona-Pitzer will return to action when it plays a non-conference game at CSU San Bernardino on Saturday.
