Women's Water Polo Wins Fifth Straight National Championship

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team defeated CMS 15-10 in the USAWP Division III Women's National Championship Game on Sunday, earning its fifth straight title.
 
The Sagehens were led by Brienz Lang, who found the net four times. Lisbon Zeigler and Katie Hugar each tallied three goals, while Layla Szymczak contributed two. Sydney BownsGabby Lewis, and Natalie Sullivan Wu each added one goal to the Sagehen total. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer established a formidable lead and secured eight goals in the first half, three in the first and five in the second. Lang opened the scoring during a power play with 5:49 left in the first quarter. Zeigler added another goal at the 5:06 mark to push the Sagehen lead to 2-0. CMS found a goal, but Lang responded with one with 0:09 left on the clock, sending Pomona-Pitzer into the second quarter ahead 3-1. 
 
CMS quickly trimmed the lead to start the second quarter as they earned another goalHugar responded with a penalty goal with 6:35 left in the period. CMS countered again in attempts to catch up, but Hugar struck again at the 5:26 mark to push the lead back to 5-3. Szymczak added another at the 4:07 mark, and Bowns converted a  ay opportunity with 1:10 left on the clock to make it 7-3. Zeigler closed the half with a goal with 0:06 left on the clock, sending Pomona-Pitzer into halftime with a formidable 8-3 lead. 
 
The Sagehens continued pressuring the Athenas and earned seven more goals in the third and fourth quarters. CMS mounted a charge in the third quarter, netting two quick goals, but Lang responded and scored a goal with 4:28 left in the period. Lewis followed and found the net with 3:21 left, extending the Pomona-Pitzer lead to 10-5. CMS netted a power play goal with 2:28 left on the clock to make it 10-6, but Sullivan Wu answered at the 1:34 mark to give the Sagehens an 11-6 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. 
 
Zeigler opened the fourth quarter scoring with a goal at the 7:02 mark to push the lead to 12-6. CMS responded with a goal of their own, but Lang struck with 3:50 left on the clock, and Szymczak followed at the 3:08 mark to extend the advantage to 14-7. Hugar sealed the Sagehen lead and netted a goal with 1:34 left on the clock making it 15-7. CMS closed out the scoring with three late goals, but Pomona-Pitzer held firm to claim a 15-10 victory and the USAWP Division III Women's National Championship.
