Pasadena, Calif. - Freshman Katy Schaefer (Los Altos, Calif. - pictured) had four goals to lead the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team to a 10-6 win over Occidental in the SCIAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Caltech.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 17-16 overall on the year, and will advance to tomorrow's championship match against Redlands, which knocked out top-seeded CMS 10-9 in the other semifinal this afternoon. The winner of that match will earn the SCIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
For the second straight tournament game, Pomona-Pitzer never trailed, as Schaefer and sophomore Vicky Gyorffy (Sacramento, Calif.) had back-to-back goals to start the second quarter after the teams ended the first stanza tied 1-1. Schaefer also had the final goal of the first half to give the Sagehens a 4-2 lead heading into the break.
After Occidental opened the scoring in the second half to close to within 4-3, sophomores Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) and Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.) scored to stretch the lead up to 6-3. Gyorffy and Schafer closed out the third quarter with goals to make the score 8-4, and Occidental wasn't able to make a run in the fourth as Pomona-Pitzer held on the rest of the way.
Senior goalie Sarah Tuggy (Los Angeles, Calif.) had 10 saves to get the win in goal for the Sagehens, who will be trying to defend their SCIAC title tomorrow.
A year ago, Pomona-Pitzer edged CMS 8-7 in the semifinals and won the championship 12-11 in triple overtime over Redlands on a Prater-Fahey sudden-death goal. Redlands won the regular season meeting between the teams this year 7-6 at Haldeman Pool.
