Sagehens Come Back In Seventh To Salvage Split With Williams

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - Senior designated player Kathryn Rabak (Grass Valley, Calif.) homered in the opener (home run pictured) and tied the nightcap with a two-out RBI single in the seventh, as Pomona-Pitzer salvaged a split of a doubleheader with Williams by taking the nightcap 3-2.

Sophomore center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) followed Rabak's tying single with a walk-off RBI single to center to finish off the 3-2 win after Williams took a 2-1 lead in the top half. Williams won the opening game 8-4, and moves to 2-4 on the year with the split, while Pomona-Pitzer moves to 7-11.

Kacey Cramer gave Williams a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning of the nightcap with an RBI double, but sophomore pitcher Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) came on in relief to leave runners on second and third and keep the Sagehens down by just one run.

That would prove to be pivotal, as Pomona-Pitzer would rally back in the bottom half. Freshman catcher Lindsay McCord led off with a hit by pitch and was replaced by pinch runner Susanne Boden (Atlanta, Ga.). One out later, sophomore third baseman Emily Glass (Davis Calif.) lined a single to left, and sophomore left fielder Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) followed with a single into shallow left that fell in front of Ally Ensor, who attempted to make a dive for it.

Emma Harrington bounced back for a strikeout for the second out, but Rabak followed with a grounder past third that Williams shortstop Merrillee Weston was able to knock down deep in the 5-6 hole, but everyone was safe as the tying run came home. Bleichner then followed with an RBI single to center field to bring home Glass with the winning run.

Pomona-Pitzer tied the score up in the bottom of the sixth inning, as junior first baseman Lauren Boden (Atlanta, Ga.) singled and moved to second on a single from Rabak. Bleichner then lined into a double play to right field as Williams appeared on the verge of getting out of the jam. However, junior starting pitcher Caitlyn Hynes (Upland, Calif.) then tapped a slow infield single back in front of the mound and beat it out easily, while Boden was running hard around third the whole way and scored when the late throw to first was wild to tie the score 1-1.

Glass, Morello, Lauren Boden and Rabak were all 2-for-4 in the nightcap in the 1-4 spots in the batting order. Theresa Legan and Cramer were 2-for-4 for the Ephs.

Rabak homered to lead off the second and give the Sagehens a 1-0 lead in the opening game, but Williams scored five times in the sixth to break open a 3-3 tie and take the 8-4 win. Ali Graebner had the key blow with a two-run double. Rabak was 2-for-3 in the opener, while Graebner finished with three RBI for Williams.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Saturday for a SCIAC doubleheader against Occidental.
