Riverside, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer defeated St. Francis (N.Y.) 11-6 and Washington & Jefferson 15-3 at the Cal Baptist Invitational on Saturday.
With the sweep, the Sagehens move over .500 for the first time this season after a difficult early-season schedule, improving to 9-8 on the year.
In the Washington & Jefferson match, the Sagehens blew open a close 6-3 game at the half by outscoring the Presidents 9-0 after intermission. Three players had hat tricks for Pomona-Pitzer, including junior Brenda Iglesias (South Gate, Calif.), sophomore Chrissie Alving-Trinh (Fresno, Calif.) and freshman Katy Schafer (Los Altos, Calif.).
Schafer also had a dominant effort in the first match with four goals in the 11-6 win over St. Francis (N.Y.). The teams were ried 3-3 at the end of the first quarter, but sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) gave the Sagehens the lead for good with 2:17 left, and Schafer scored twice in the final two minutes of the half.
Sophomore Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) then took over the hot hand in the second half with the first two goals of the third quarter to break the game open, before Schafer stretched it to 9-3 with 1:53 left in the third.
St. Francis scored with three seconds left in the third, and added the first goal of the fourth to make it 9-5, but Alving-Trinh officially killed off the comeback hopes with 3:30 left to make it 10-5, and sophomore Vicky Gyorffy (Sacramento, Calif.) added another.
Pomona-Pitzer will next be in action at the Arizona State Invitational, facing the host Sun Devils to start the tournament, and closing it out against Michigan on Saturday. In between, the Sagehens will face Cal Baptist and Hartwick.
