Claremont, Calif. - The No. 10 ranked Bowdoin Women's Tennis team won five of six singles matches to seal the win before doubles as it took a 7-2 win over No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer on Friday at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
The Sagehens suffered their first loss of the year, falling to 7-1, while Bowdoin improves to 5-0 with the win.
Freshman Mae Coyiuto (Makati City, Philippines - pictured) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to provide the first point of the match, improving her record to 8-0 on the year. However, the Polar Bears won the next five singles matches in a row to take the win. Chantalle Lavertu fell 6-0 in the first set at No. 2, but regrouped to win the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2 for a key point that swung the momentum of the match into Bowdoin's favor.
Susanna Howard then won in a second-set tiebreaker to stretch the Bowdoin lead to 4-1, and Kate Winingham pulled out the third set 6-4 at No. 5 to seal the win for the Polar Bears.
Singles were played first (due to multiple matches being held on Pomona-Pitzer's courts), and the doubles took place with nothing at stake for the team score. Jamie Solomon (Los Gatos, Calif.) and freshman Marie Fleming (Boston, Mass.) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 2, but Bowdoin won 8-3 at 1 and then took the final point of the match 9-8 in a tiebreaker at No. 3.
The Sagehens will have 11 days off for some needed rest after a busy stretch of schedule, and will be back in action on March 26 against UC Santa Cruz.
