Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team dropped a pair of close decisions at the Cal Lutheran Posada Royale Invitational, falling 14-12 in overtime to Azusa Pacific and 9-8 to host Cal Lutheran.
With the losses, the Sagehens slip to 2-4 on the young season. Sophomore Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif. - pictured) had five goals in the Azusa Pacific loss and three against Cal Lutheran in the losing effort.
Pomona-Pitzer had a four-goal lead in the second half against Azusa Pacific at 10-6 on a Woodward goal with 4:16 left in the third, but APU rallied to tie the score 11-11 in the final minutes, knotting the game up with just 1:55 on the clock.
After surrendering the first two goals of the extra sessions, Woodward scored with 57 seconds left in the second overtime to get the Sagehens within 13-12, but Azusa Pacific was able to answer the goal with 32 seconds left to seal the win.
Sophomores Mahalia Prater-Fahey (San Diego, Calif.), Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Vicky Gyorffy (Sacramento, Calif.) each added two goals for the Sagehens.
In the second game, Cal Lutheran used a 3-0 run to turn a 6-6 tie into a 9-6 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Sagehens scored the next two goals to pull within 9-8 with just over two minutes to play on a goal from sophomore Chrissie Alving-Trinh (Clovis, Calif.) but were unable to find the equalizer.
Junior Kerstin Henshall (Moraga, Calif.) and freshman Katy Schafer (Los Altos, Calif.) each had two goals for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer concludes play at the Posada Royale Invitational tomorrow with a 1 p.m. game against Occidental.
