Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Beth Smilkstein (pictured, right) and Nicole Bauthier (pictured, left) each had double figures in digs on their Senior Day as the Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team defeated Chapman 3-1 on Friday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
The win improved Pomona-Pitzer's record to 19-7 on the year and 11-4 in the SCIAC, moving it past Chapman (10-5) and into second place in the SCIAC behind undefeated Cal Lutheran. The win was also the fourth in a row for the Sagehens (all by 3-1 scores) and 10th in its last 11 matches.
Allie Frappier, who came into the match leading the nation in kills per set (6.16) stayed right on her usual pace with 24 kills in four sets, including the match-ender to a 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 25-17 win. She also had 14 digs to tie for team-high honors in that category, along with Smilkstein, while Bauthier added 10.
The Sagehens also had a big day at the net with 13 blocks, as junior Samantha Cahill had eight, freshman Kelli Derrah had six, and junior Kirea Mazzolini had three solo blocks and two assists. One of her solo blocks ended the second game 25-22 after a Frappier kill gave the Sagehens a two-point lead.
Chapman pushed the Sagehens into a fourth set with a narrow 25-23 win to pull within 2-1, as Michelle Hammer had a kill to break a 23-23 tie and an attack error gave the Panthers the 25-23 win. Pomona-Pitzer, though, jumped out in a hurry to an 8-2 lead in the fourth set and were never threatened.
The SCIAC semifinals on Thursday will be held at Cal Lutheran, with the host Regals serving as the top seed. Chapman and CMS will also be in the tournament, although their seeds will be determined following tomorrow's play (Chapman faces Occidental and CMS faces Redlands).
