Box Score Claremont, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Volleyball team rallied from a 19-11 deficit in the first game and a 23-18 deficit in the third game to take a hard-fought 3-0 win over CMS on Tuesday evening at Ducey Gymnasium.
Game scores were 27-25, 26-24, 25-23 as the Sagehens improve to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the SCIAC, passing over CMS in the standings as the Athenas slip to 11-3 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Junior Allie Frappier, who entered the day leading the nation in kills per set (5.4) extended her lead in that category with 27 in a three-set match, while also leading the team in digs with 15. Her final two kills came back-to-back in the middle of the 7-0 match-ending run, bringing the Sagehens within 23-22.
Coming out of the timeout, junior middle hitter Kirea Mazzolini tied the score with a kill on a broken play, and a CMS hitting error brought the Sagehens to match point. Mazzolini and junior outside hitter Ellen Yamasaki (pictured) then combined on the winning block along the right side of the net, putting the ball straight down for the final point.
The momentum changed at the end of the first game, which was tied 25-25 after Frappier's kill fought off a game point. CMS appeared to have a go-ahead kill, but it was called for being out of rotation and the point swung over to Pomona-Pitzer. After the Athenas were unable to get off a quality attack on the return of service, the Sagehens went straight to Frappier, who mashed the ball down for a 1-0 lead.
The second game was also tied 24-24, when Frappier came through with a back row kill to give the Sagehens another game point. The CMS serve reception was too long and carried over the net, where junior middle hitter Samantha Cahill re-directed it straight down for a 26-24 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Frappier was the story on offense, but the Sagehens also had 12 blocks on defense, with Cahill recording seven block assists, Mazzolini one solo and four assists, Kelli Derrah five assists, and Yamasaki four assists.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday, when it hosts Redlands for a 7:30 p.m. match.
