Box Score 2 Claremont, Calif. - Junior Allie Frappier matched her career high with 32 kills for the fourth time in her Sagehen career, but third-ranked Cal Lutheran was able to fight off a stubborn challenge and take a 3-1 win on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Freshman Kelli Derrah (pictured) had 19 kills as the Sagehens took a 3-2 win over Rose-Hulman in their first match of the day, while resting Frappier and three other starters.
Game scores against Cal Lutheran were 25-21, 27-29, 14-25, 23-25 as most of the match was played extremely close. Game scores against Rose-Hulman were 25-13, 18-25, 20-25, 25-20, 15-7. With the split, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the SCIAC, while Cal Lutheran remains undefeated against Division III teams, moving to 21-1 overall and 10-0 in the SCIAC.
The first meeting at Cal Lutheran went to five games, with the Regals prevailing 15-13 in the fifth, the closest they have come to dropping a Division III match this season. Pomona-Pitzer was close to pushing them to the brink again, winning the first game 25-21 and then rallying from a 23-17 deficit to tie it 24-24 on back-to-back Frappier kills. Another Frappier kill gave the Sagehens a 26-25 lead, but Kylie McLogan (25 kills) came up with a key one to answer and then put the Regals ahead with another kill 28-27 before a set error ended it to level the match at 1-1.
Cal Lutheran had an easier time in the third game, winning 25-14 to take a 2-1 lead, but game four was tight the whole way, as the Sagehens led 22-21 before a 3-0 Cal Lutheran run. Frappier answered with her 32nd kill to make it 24-23, but the Sagehens were whistled for a ball-handling error for the final point of the match.
The Regals had 13 blocks on the day, several on Frappier, who despite matching her career high (and the Pomona-Pitzer record for a four-set match) hit .215 due to 15 errors. Junior Ellen Yamasaki had nine kills to rank second on the Sagehens, while Derrah had seven.
In the first match of the day, the Sagehens rested their top four of their top hitters (Frappier, Michelle Schultz, Kirea Mazzolini, Samantha Cahill) for the match-up with Cal Lutheran and were able to pull out a five-set win over Rose-Hulman.
Derrah had a career-high 19 kills for Pomona-Pitzer, while Yamasaki added 13. Freshman Sarah Gamble added six hills and four blocks, contributing several key points. Freshman Lena Fox had eight kills and no errors in 25 attempts.
Pomona-Pitzer trailed two games to one, but regrouped for a 25-20 win in the fourth game. In game five, the Sagehens used a 7-0 run to turn a narrow 7-6 lead into a commanding 14-6 advantage before finishing off the match 15-7.
Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Friday when it travels to Occidental for a 7:30 match, before hosting CMS on Saturday at 6 p.m.
