Box Score Thousand Oaks, Calif. - The No. 8 Cal Lutheran Football team used four touchdowns from senior All-American receiver Eric Rogers (three receiving, one rushing) to pull away for a 38-10 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening in the SCIAC opener for both teams.
With the win, the Kingsmen improve to 2-1 on the year, while Pomona-Pitzer falls to 0-3.
Senior quarterback Luke Ferguson (Silverton, Ore. - pictured) provided a highlight for the Sagehens when he connected with senior wide receiver Yoshi Rothman (La Jolla, Calif.) on a 50-yard touchdown pass with 12:40 left in regulation.
Rogers, though, had most of the highlights on the day, as he opened the scoring in the first quarter when he ran in a 38-yard reverse, and then added a touchdown reception early in the second quarter to make it 14-0. The Kingsmen capped off the first half with a 73-yard punt return from Vincent Minor to set up a nine-yard touchdown run from quarterback Kevin Ramay with 2:51 left in the second quarter.
Rogers added his fourth touchdown of the day in the third quarter (32 yards), offsetting the 50-yard pass from Ferguson to Rothman in the fourth quarter. Rogers finished the day with nine catches for 135 yards and three touchdowns, while Ramay was 21-29 passing for 282 yards and three touchdowns.
Senior running back Luke Sweeney (Broken Arrow, Okla.) saw his first action of the season after missing the first two games with an injury and had a solid effort, tallying 80 yards on 22 carries while earning most of his yardage in small chunks (his long run of the day was nine yards). Sweeney improved his career total to 2,399 yards, moving him into third place all-time at Pomona-Pitzer, 80 out of second place (2,479 from Jonathan Samples) and 368 behind the program record (2,767 held by Jim Regan).
Ferguson finished the day 11-20 passing for 122 yards, with Rothman accounting for seven catches for 111 yards, his second straight game with 100 or more yards receiving. Junior kicker Michael Weil (San Diego, Calif.) added a 27-yard field goal for the Sagehens in the third quarter for the other Sagehen points.
The defense was led by junior cornerback Weston Staubus (Solana Beach, Calif.) with 12 tackles (nine solo) and junior safety Nick Sbardellati (Nuevo, Calif.) with 10. Junior linebacker Kyle Roskamp (Chesterfield, Mo.) had seven tackles and an interception, while freshman defensive lineman Matthew Tesimale (Ontario, Calif.) had his first career interception as well.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next Saturday when it travels to Chapman for a 7 p.m. contest.
