Chapman Uses Late Run In Fourth To Finish Off 3-1 Win Over Sagehens

Anaheim, Calif. – The Chapman Volleyball team used two big runs in the fourth game to pull away and finish off a 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening.

Chapman improves to 10-2 overall and remains perfect in the SCIAC at 4-0, while Pomona-Pitzer slips to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in league play. Game scores in the match were 25-18, 25-12, 24-26, 25-16

Trailing 2-0 in the match, the Sagehens dug down and pulled out a 26-24 in the third game to stay in it. Pomona-Pitzer led 24-22 before Chapman scored two straight points to tie it. Sophomore Ellen Yamasaki (Salinas, Calif. - pictured) had a kill to break the tie, and sophomore Samantha Cahill (Vancouver, Wash.) followed with a solo block to give the Sagehens the 26-24 win.

A service ace in the third game from sophomore setter Dani Kritter (Culpepper, Va.) gave the Sagehens the early upper hand with a 4-0 lead, but Chapman erased the advantage with a Val Geiger kill to tie the score 7-7. McKenna Roice and Geiger had consecutive kills as part of a 3-0 run to help put the Panthers ahead 15-12, but Michelle Schultz (Chicago, Ill.) had two kills in a 4-0 run to give the Sagehens and 18-17 lead.

In the fourth game, Pomona-Pitzer fell behind 9-3, but came all the way back to take a brief 11-10 lead, but an 8-0 run from Chapman made the score 20-12. The Sagehens regrouped after a timeout to close within 20-16, but the Panthers responded with three straight kills to start a game-closing 5-0 run to seal the win.

In the opening game, Pomona-Pitzer took a 17-16 lead on back-to-back kills from sophomore Yamasaki, but Chapman regrouped and closed out the game with a 9-1 run. The second game saw Chapman pull away earlier, as the Panthers broke open a 5-5 tie and took a 12-6 lead on an Ashleigh Gideon kill. Pomona-Pitzer was unable to string together a rally the rest of the game, as Chapman coasted to the 25-12 win.

Schultz led the Sagehens with nine kills, while Yamasaki added eight. Ferrin had 20 kills in 40 attempts for the Panthers, while Gideon added 17 kills and Roice had 16, while Corrine Ostrovsky tallied 60 assists and 20 digs.

Pomona-Pitzer returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Occidental for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
