Claremont, Calif. - The ninth-ranked Middlebury Women's Tennis team took a 9-0 decision over No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening at Pauley Courts.
The Sagehens were most competitive at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, where junior Jessica Hsu (Henderson, Nev.) and senior Nicole Holsted (Edmond, Okla. - pictured) had tiebreakers. Holsted was close to forcing a third set, but was unable to break Dorrie Paradies' serve leading 5-4 and 6-5, and then fell in the final two points of the tiebreaker to drop a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) decision.
Hsu forced a tiebreaker in the first set against Brittney Faber, but dropped it 7-4, and then was even at 3-3 in the second set, before Faber held serve, broke, and then held serve again for the 6-3 win.
Hsu also filled in at No. 2 doubles for the injured Sammy Chao (Hong Kong, China), who is unbeaten this year in both singles and doubles when in the line-up. She and Arthi Padmanabhan (Saratoga, Calif.) came up on the short end of an 8-4 score against Lok-Sze Leung and Anna Burke.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action this weekend for SCIAC matches at Whittier on Friday and home for Occidental on Saturday.
