Claremont, Calif. - Senior Annie Oxborough-Yankus (Wallingford, Conn.) had a team-high three goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Chapman 10-5 to split its two matches on the day at Haldeman Pool.
Long Beach State defeated the Sagehens 8-5 in their first match of the day, as Pomona-Pitzer sees its record move to 10-15 on the year with the split.
Oxborough-Yankus and fellow senior captain Perri Hopkins (Agoura, Calif.) helped put the Sagehens ahead 3-1 in the first quarter against Chapman, and freshman Mahalia Prater-Fahey San Diego, Calif.) added a goal with three seconds left in the opening quarter to make it 4-1.
After Chapman cut it to 4-2, sophomore Alex Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif.) and freshman Alyssa Woodward (Riverside, Calif.) scored to give the Sagehens a 6-2 lead at the break. Chapman started off the third quarter with a goal, but Oxborough-Yankus had back-to-back goals to push the lead to 8-3.
Sarah Westcott (Menlo Park, Calif.) and Chrissie Alving-Trinh (Fresno, Calif.) extended the scoring run to four straight goals to make it 10-3 with 5:22 left in the fourth, and the Sagehens were able to cruise from there.
In the first match of the day against Long Beach State, the 49ers scored three straight goals in the second quarter to take a 4-1 lead. The Sagehens were able to get back to within 5-4 on a five-meter goal from Woodward with 34 seconds left in the half, but did not score again until 2:42 remained on a goal from Woodward to cut it to 7-5, and the 49ers were able to essentially kill the clock, with one last goal with three seconds left to make the final score 8-5.
Wesctott and Woodward each had two goals for the Sagehens against Long Beach State, while Hopkins added one.
