There They Go Again: Sagehens Sweep Cal Lutheran With Another Walkoff

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, Calif. - Senior first baseman Bri Marcantoni (Chino Hills, Calif. - pictured) singled off the wall in center field in the bottom of the seventh to give the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team a 5-4 win over Cal Lutheran in the second game of a SCIAC doubleheader on Saturday.

Pomona-Pitzer won the first game 8-0 in six innings as it improves to 15-8 overall and 8-2 in the SCIAC, good for sole possession of second place in the league standings. Cal Lutheran falls to 8-20 overall and 1-11 in the SCIAC. The Sagehens have now won 10 of their last 11 games, with six of those 10 wins coming in their last at-bat (five walk-off wins at home and a 2-1 road win over Whittier in eight innings).

The Sagehens led 4-0 early in the second game after a three-run double from freshman catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) in the first inning, and an RBI single from Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) in the second. However, Cal Lutheran was able to chip away and finally pulled even when they were down to their final at-bat.

With runners on first and second and two out, Alex Templin, hit a comebacker into the circle that deflected off the glove of Pomona-Pitzer pitcher Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) and wrong-footed senior shortstop Ari Roach (Pinole, Calif.), rolling into the shallow outfield grass to allow the tying run to score. Cal Lutheran's Kayla Sakamoto then followed with a liner into the left-center field gap, but Morello was able to track it down on the move to end the inning and prevent further damage.

Morello then led off the bottom of the seventh and hit a screaming liner to second that short-hopped the glove of Sara Lichtsinn at second base, who was unable to make the difficult stab as Morello reached on an infield single. Roach sacrificed her to second, and Marcantoni followed with a drive deep to center field, which would have ordinarily been a double, but she stopped at first as Morello raced home with the game-ending run.

Morello was 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while freshman center fielder Leah Bleichner (Simi Valley, Calif.) was 3-for-3.

The first game was far less dramatic, although it was technically a walk-off win as well, as Roach hit a solo homer in the sixth to make the score 8-0 and enforce the eight-run rule. Senior right fielder Emily Buika (Long Beach, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run single in a four-run fourth than broke a scoreless tie. Glass also had a two-run single in that inning to put the Sagehens in front.

Riley threw a three-hit shutout in the first game, and then got the win in the nightcap without allowing an earned run as she improved to 9-2 in her rookie season.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Tuesday, when it finishes a suspended game with Chapman at 5 p.m. (Chapman leads 5-4 in the sixth) and then faces Lewis & Clark in a neutral site game at Chapman afterwards.
