Marich Helps Sagehens Pull Away From Puget Sound

Box Score

Claremont, Calif. - Senior Martha Marich (McLean, Va.) had seven goals as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Lacrosse team fought off a challenge from Puget Sound for a 19-16 win on Wednesday afternoon at Merritt Field.

With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-5 on the year, as Marich also contributed two assists, nine draw controls, six ground balls and five caused turnovers to her seven-goal performance. Puget Sound, which was led by 18 saves from goalie Linnea Bostrom and six goals from Julia Schulman, drops to 1-5.

Puget Sound kept the game close throughout, as a free position goal from freshman Julie Necarsulmer (Kennett Square, Pa. - pictured) with seven seconds left in the first half put the Sagehens ahead 10-9 at the break, despite outshooting the Loggers 23-12 in the first stanza. Bostrom had 10 of her 18 saves in the first half alone, several from point blank range, to keep her team close.

Marich, though, scored the first goal of the second half 22 seconds in, and on two other occasions when Puget Sound got to within one goal (at 11-10 and 14-13), Marich answered back with a goal to prevent the Loggers from getting a chance to pull even.

Sophomore midfielder Logan Galansky (Denver, Colo.) also helped the Sagehens put the game away with back-to-back goals after Puget Sound closed within 16-14, giving Pomona-Pitzer an 18-14 lead with 5:50 to go. Marich added one more insurance goal, as Schulman struck twice in the final minute to get the Loggers within 19-16, but not close enough to threaten the lead.

Sophomore Jana London (Chevy Chase, Md.) had four goals and two assists, Galansky had three goals and three assists, and Necarsulmer added three goals for the Sagehens, which snapped a four-game losing streak with the last three losses all coming in nailbiters (two by one goal and a third in overtime). Caroline Cook and Kristine Morris each added four goals for Puget Sound.

The Sagehens dominated most of the stat sheet except the final score, as it outshot Puget Sound 42-21, won 23 of 37 draw controls, and forced the Loggers to successfully complete only 13 of 26 clear attempts (compared to 8-11 for the Sagehens).

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday for an 11 a.m. contest against North Central (Ill.) before heading up for a rematch with Puget Sound in Tacoma on Saturday at 1 p.m.
