Tokunaga, Riley Lead Sagehens To Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Whittier, Calif. – Freshman second baseman Meagan Tokunaga (Albany, Calif. - pictured) had the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning of the first game and added a three-run homer in the second as the Pomona-Pitzer Softball team stretched its winning streak to six games with 2-1 and 4-0 wins over Whittier on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman pitcher Fiona Riley (Berkeley, Calif.) won both games in the circle, throwing a three-hitter in the opener and a five-hit shutout in the second game for the Sagehens, who improve to 11-7 overall and 6-2 in the SCIAC with the wins. Whittier falls to 6-10 with the losses.

In the opening game, Whittier scored its only run of the day to take a 1-0 lead in the third, but senior first baseman Bri Marcantoni (Chino Hills, Calif.) answered right back with a solo homer in the fourth to tie the score 1-1.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the eighth, when freshman catcher Emily Glass (Davis, Calif.) drew a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Shannon Julius (Coronado, Calif.). Julius went to second on a bunt from Kathryn Rabak (Grass Valley, Calif.), then stole third. Tokunaga then drove her home with an RBI fielder's choice, and Riley shut the door in the bottom half after the Poets put runners on first and second and two out.

Riley allowed only three hits, struck out four and walked none to get the eight-inning complete-game victory.

In the nightcap, Tokunaga was 2-for-2 with a three-run homer and a steal of home on a first-and-third play. Her three-run homer broke a scoreless tie in the second, her first-career round-tripper, while her steal of home came in the seventh. After drawing a walk, she moved to second on a single from senior right fielder Emily Buika (Long Beach, Calif.), and went to third on a forceout. The Sagehens then executed the first-and-third play perfectly with freshman Ashley Morello (Santa Cruz, Calif.) getting thrown out at second, but not before Tokunaga scooted home with an insurance run.

With two outs and nobody on, Whittier managed to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Riley, though, was able to come up with the big strikeout to conclude her 15th inning of work on the day and pick up her second win. She allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two in the nightcap for the complete-game shutout.

Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Thursday when it steps out of conference for a home doubleheader with Puget Sound at 12 p.m.
