Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Aimee Evans scored 10 minutes into the second half to give the Chapman Women's Soccer team a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday afternoon, in a game which saw the two teams combine for only 13 shot attempts.
The win enables Chapman (10-4, 5-4 SCIAC) to leapfrog over Pomona-Pitzer (5-5-1, 4-4-1 SCIAC) into fourth place in the conference standings. The top four teams in the SCIAC receive bids to the postseason tournament, although there are still five regular season games left to play.
The game-winning goal was set up on a second-chance through ball on a counter-attack. A Chapman player attempted to play Evans in behind the defense, but a Pomona-Pitzer midfielder was able to deflect the ball. The deflection, though, went to Chapman's Rebeccah Bortz, who threaded the needle with the same pass attempt and got Evans in alone on the right side of the field.
Evans was able to turn on a burst of speed an get in alone into the penalty area along the right edge of the box. She drew Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Helena Epps (Santa Cruz, Calif.) off her line, and hit a hard, low shot that tucked inside the far post to make the score 1-0 at the 55:17 mark.
Pomona-Pitzer had two good chances to tie the rest of the way. With about 19 minutes to go, freshman midfielder Julia Dohner (Bethesda, Md.) got to a bouncing ball from 15 yards out and send a line drive on net, but it went right to Chapman goalkeeper Marissa Fehrman, who made a two-handed save. Seconds later, Epps stopped a breakaway from Olivia Do to keep the game 1-0.
With 10 minutes left, junior midfielder Charlotte Fisken (Seattle, Wash. - pictured) played junior forward Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) in behind the defense with a perfect through ball from midfield. Tao put a hard shot towards goal from 15 yards out that got over the onrushing Fehrman, but sailed just over the crossbar.
Pomona-Pitzer finished with an 8-5 edge in shots on the day, although managed only two shots in the second half. Epps finished with two saves for the Sagehens, while Fehrman also had two saves for the Panthers.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Saturday for a road game against first-place Cal Lutheran at 1 p.m.
