Berkeley, CA - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team opened the 2012 season with some tough opponents and dropped all four matches at the Cal Speedo Invitational.
The Sagehens opened with a 21-4 defeat to No. 2 Cal and a 19-6 loss to No. 11 Loyola Marymount on Friday. On Saturday, Pomona-Pitzer fell to Cal State Monterey Bay 7-5 and Cal Baptist 15-7.
Freshman Alyssa Woodward (pictured) led the way for the Sagehens, scoring half of the team's goals in both contests on Friday. She had two in the loss to Cal, and then followed up with three against Loyola Marymount. She also added two in the loss to Monterey Bay on Saturday, tying for team high honors, and three in the loss to Cal Baptist.
Kerstin Henshall added two goals for Pomona-Pitzer against LMU, while Sarah Westcott added one. Westcott and Annie Oxborough-Yankus had the other goals for the Sagehens against Cal, which was paced by five goals from Jennifer Docto.
Rachel Noll performed well in relief in goal against Loyola-Marymount, recording five second half saves and allowing six goals. Erin Manke led the Lions with three goals, while Elise Ponce had nine saves.
Chrissie Alving-Trinh had two goals against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, while Mihalia Prater-Fahey added one. Junior goalie Sarah Tuggy had five saves, while Katie Sowul led all scorers with three goals for the Otters. Petra Kovacs tied Woodward for game-high honors with three goals for Cal Baptist, while Alving-Trinh, Prater-Fahey, Hopkins and Westcott all added goals for the Sagehens.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action at the Lancer Mini-Tournament at Riverside next weekend.
