Box Score Orange, Calif. – Sophomore midfielder Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal in the first half, and senior forward Traci Lopez (Santa Fe, N.M.) added a late penalty kick as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Soccer team earned a 2-0 win over Chapman in a non-conference road game on Saturday evening.
The win improves the Sagehens to 5-2 on the season, with all five wins coming by shutout. Pomona-Pitzer had won four straight games before seeing the streak snapped with a loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday.
Tao opened the scoring in the 18th minute when she converted on an unassisted goal, beating Chapman goalkeeper Chloe Canta for her first goal of the season.
The Sagehens had dominated up until the goal, outshooting Chapman 6-0 over the first 17:44. However, the momentum quickly swung as Chapman's Aimee Evans hit the post just 10 seconds after the ensuing kick-off to nearly even the score right up at 1-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Wolfarth (Arlington, Va.) then saved a rebound attempt from Evans and had another save three minutes later to keep the score 1-0.
After withstanding that brief flurry, Pomona-Pitzer was able to settle back in and hold Chapman without a shot for the final 20 minutes of the first half as it took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Late in the game, a fresher Sagehen team pushed hard for an insurance goal, taking seven shots in a seven minute span, but being continually denied. Sophomore midfielder Kara Freedman (New York, N.Y.) clanged one shot off the post, while Canta had two saves to deny other opportunities.
Finally, though, the Sagehens got the second goal after Chapman was whistled for an infraction in the box. Lopez took the penalty kick with 7:01 remaining and slotted home the shot for her team-high fifth goal of the season.
Pomona-Pitzer finished with a 19-8 edge in shots on the day. Wolfarth had six saves to get the shutout, her fourth of the season (as well as one other shared shutout), including two saves in the final minute of regulation as Chapman tried desperately to spoil the clean sheet.
The Sagehens return to action when they get back to SCIAC play with a road game at Occidental on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
