Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Madi Shove had a goal and an assist as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's Soccer team snapped Pomona-Pitzer's four-game winning streak with a 3-1 victory in a SCIAC league game on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops the Sagehens to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the SCIAC, while the Athenas improve to 2-1-2 overall and 2-1 in conference. Pomona-Pitzer finished with an 18-10 edge in shots on the game, but could not overcome the early deficit.
Pomona-Pitzer trailed 2-0 at the half after giving up two goals in the first 13 minutes, and pressured hard for most of the second stanza. The Sagehens didn't finally break through until the 80th minute, when junior midfielder Allie Tao (Alamo, Calif.) has a shot saved by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps goalkeeper Hannah Dunham, but sophomore midfielder Erin Edmonds (Salem, Ore. - pictured) crashed in alone and tapped in the rebound to cut the lead to 2-1.
Tao nearly got in behind the defense moments later for a breakaway, but Athena defender Rosa Ahn hustled back to break the play up.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps then tacked on a back-breaking goal off a goalie punt, as Shove flicked a header on to Kerry Moller. Moller dribbled into the box and cut back to the right past a Sagehen defender and tucked a shot inside the left post to make the score 3-1 with 5:52 left.
The Athenas got on the board early with a goal at the 5:34 mark. Lauren Phillips beat two Sagehen defenders along the right end line and broke into the box, before slotting a low pass in front of the goal. Annie Belanger was the first one to it, and hit a low shot to the right of Pomona-Pitzer goalkeeper Emma Wolfarth (Arlington, Va.), who got a piece of it but it still trickled by over the line.
It was the first goal the Sagehens have allowed all season in the flow of play (the only goal through the first five games was on a penalty kick).
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps then tacked on another quick goal at the 12:14 mark, when Ahn played a long through ball up the middle. Shove was able to split the Sagehen defense and took an 18-yard shot that tucked into the left side of the net.
Pomona-Pitzer regrouped after the quick two-goal deficit and took eight first-half shots, including a rocket from Tao that was punched away by goalkeeper Hannah Dunham. Nicole Quilliam (Menlo Park, Calif.) followed up and hit the rebound off the post, but was off-sides on the play anyway.
Quilliam then nearly cut the deficit in the first minutes of the second half when she beat Dunham to a ball at the top of the box and almost had an open net, but Athena defender Lauren Allen retreated onto the goal line and blocked the shot away.
Dunham finished with nine saves for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, helping the Athenas to the win despite an 18-10 deficit in shots. Wolfarth finished with five saves for the Sagehens.
The Sagehens will next be in action when they step out of conference on Saturday for a 7 p.m. game at Chapman.
