CLAREMONT, CA - With the Sagehens trailing by three runs and running low on innings, Ali Corley stepped to the plate with bases loaded and the game on the line in the fifth. Corley did not disappoint, drilling a towering grand slam over the center field fence to give P-P a 6-5 lead over the first place Athenas. The one run lead was enough for the Sagehens to take the win and knock first place CMS into third place in SCIAC.
P-P took an early lead in the first inning when Corley singled home Caitlyn Hynes to put P-P up 1-0. Yet, CMS did not take much time to respond, racking up four runs on a chain of singles in the first. In the second Jamie Garcia and Kathryn Rabak hit back-to-back singles. Jamie Goldberg then lined a single just out of the reach of the diving center fielder to score Garcia and close the gap. CMS pushed another run across in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. In the fifth, Alexis Garcia, Hynes, and Arianna Roach all hit singles to load the bases. This brought up Corley, who smashed her grand slam, putting the Sagehens up for good. Pitcher Carolyn Cross kept the Athenas scoreless the rest of the way and P-P took the 6-5 victory.
