CLAREMONT, CA - The Sagehens, propelled by a strong start, powered past the Poets of Whittier College 11-9.
Despite initially falling behind 4-2 in the first fifteen minutes, the hens surged back to close the half leading 6-5 after key free positions and goals by Jana London, Molly Van Kennen, and Logan Galansky. The Hen defense, anchored by goalkeeper Casey Leek, proved solid, shutting down the Poets.
The second half was a dog-fight until the Hens scored three unanswered goals, gaining a lead they would maintain until the final whistle. Emma Molloy and Hannah T'Kindt rounded out the scoring for Pomona-Pitzer. Leek had an impressive 11 saves in the second half, denying the poets time and again. The Poets staged a furious comeback attempt, drawing as close as 10-9 with less than seven minutes remaining, but it was too late. Sealing the win for the sagehens, freshman Logan Galansky scored of a free position shot and the hens were able to hold off the poets for the remaining 3 minutes.
