CLAREMONT, CA - On Wednesday night, the Pomona-Pitzer Saghens played a grueling game against the Occidental Tigers, and came away with a 15-14 win. For sixty minutes, both teams fought for a lead and attempted to close the marginal gaps that would determine the winning and losing team.
The Sagehens nabbed two quick goals to start the first half, The first goal was scored by Martha Marich. Marich's goal was shortly followed by Logan Galansky. They were quickly matched by the Tigers, and by the end of the first half, PP led by only one goal. The defense played an excellent first half, holding the Tigers attack to six goals. The Sagehens won 11 of the 14 draw controls in the half.
The second half began with the Tigers scoring twice, giving them the lead. Occidental continued to score, eventually gaining a three-goal margin. The game-changing goal was scored halfway through the second half by the Sagehen's Rachel Kessler, a defender who took the ball from the defensive end straight to the goal. With the score 13-11 in favor of the Tigers, the Sagehens gained momentum, eventually took the lead, and held on for the win. Marich and Galansky led the offense, with six and five goals, respectively. On the defensive end, freshman goalie Casey Leek saved 13 goals, while the entire defensive unit held the Tigers offense in check.
On Monday, April 4 the Sagehens play the CMS Athenas, and on Wednesday, April 6 will host the University of Redlands.
