Box Score Claremont, Calif. - Freshmen Michael Cohen (Tarzana, Calif. - pictured) and Jack Klukas (Eden Prairie, Minn.) each hit clutch three-pointers in the final minute to give the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team a 79-76 win over St. Olaf on the second day of the David Wells Classic on Saturday.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 2-1 on the season, including 2-0 at the David Wells Classic after also defeating Dominican (Ill.) on Friday, while their only loss remains a double-overtime defeat to defending national champion St. Thomas (Minn.). St. Olaf falls to 1-3 with the loss.
Cohen led the way for the Sagehens on the day with 23 points on 8-11 shooting, including 5-6 from three-point territory, as he improved to 20-30 from the floor in the last three games from his shooting guard position. Sophomore forward John Weiss (Cleveland, Ohio) also had a big day, chipping in a career high 20 points on 6-12 shooting.
A Klukas three-pointer with 5:51 to play gave Pomona-Pitzer a 71-59 lead, but the Oles responded with a 15-0 run to storm back and take the lead. St. Olaf hit four three-pointers to tie the score, and then used an old-fashioned three-point play with 2:31 to go from Sterling Neilsen to take the lead, making the score 74-71.
However, with 1:01 to go, Cohen finally broke the run as he made a three-pointer to get the Sagehens back even at 74-74. Connor Gunderson made one of two foul shots with 53 seconds left to give the Oles back the lead at 75-74, but Klukas then stepped up with the biggest shot of his young career, knocking down a three-pointer with 17 seconds left to give the Sagehens the lead at 77-75.
St. Olaf missed a shot in traffic to try to tie the game, and sophomore forward Jake Klewer (Tucson, Ariz.) pulled down a clutch rebound and made two foul shots to ice the game. Gunderson made one foul shot with a second left to finish off the scoring at 79-76.
Klewer had 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Sagehens, to go along with three assists, as Pomona-Pitzer turned the ball over only seven times on the day. Stu Neville led St. Olaf with 24 points on 9-13 shooting, while Bobby Fong added 22 points, including 5-7 shooting from three-point territory.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action next weekend at the University of Redlands Tournament.
