The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens had a solid SCIAC opener against the
Whittier Poets. On a perfectly clear day for soccer, the Sagehens
came out strong, dominating possession. The new players held their
own, blending well with the veterans on the team. Freshman Allie Tao scored her first collegiate goal after an incredible cross from
fellow freshman Haley Irving-Ruffing into the box and assisted offo
of a flick from Traci Lopez. The Sagehens took the 1-0 lead
in the 8th minute and it turned out to be the
game-winner. Sophomore defender Claire Mueller added another goal
for the Sagehens in the 30th minute, when she
intercepted the ball at midfield, took a couple touches and drilled
a shot from 35-yards out.
The Sagehens entered the second half looking to use all their
available players and try some new things. Although the rest of the
game remained scoreless, Pomona-Pitzer never let down their
intensity, creating some good touches on offense and taking seven
more shots in the half. For the game, the Sagehens outshot the
Poets 16-4. The defense cleaned up everything that came
their way and freshman goalkeeper Talia Shulman was only called
upon to make one save on the day. The shutout was the
Sagehens third of the young season and they have yet to allow a
goal in regulation time.
With the victory, Pomona-Pitzer moves to 3-1 on the year and 1-0
in SCIAC play. Next up, the Sagehens hit the road for their first
away game with a tough match-up against the University of
Redlands.
