The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens nabbed their first conference win of
the season Saturday, beating the Occidental Tigers 9-1, before
falling 3-1 in the second game of the double header.
The Sagehens rallied early in game one when Alexis Garcia
(PI '11) and Ali Corley (PO '11) hit back-to-back
singles in the bottom of the first. A few walks put the Sagehens up
1-0, setting the stage for Jamie Goldberg (PO '11) who
singled to left field giving the Sagehens a 3-0 lead. The Tigers
fought back in the second inning with an RBI double to close the
gap. The Sagehens took control in the fourth as
back-to-back-to-back doubles from Arianna Roach (PI '12),
Garcia, and Corley put Pomona-Pitzer up 5-1. RBI singles from
Carolyn Cross (PO '13), Brianna Marcantoni (PI '12),
and Goldberg gave the Sagehens three more runs and an 8-1 lead. In
the bottom of the sixth inning, Roach walked to score Goldberg and
give the Sagehens a 9-1 win, invoking the 8-run mercy rule.
The Sagehens started off strong in game two, when Goldberg doubled
to right field with two outs in the second inning. Emily Buika (PI
'12) hit an RBI single up the middle scoring Goldberg and putting
Pomona-Pitzer up 1-0. The Sagehen bats fell silent after the second
inning, and Occidental tied the game in the fourth and took the
lead in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, the Tigers Julie
Nicholson homered to left, putting Occidental up for good 3-1.
