On Monday, March 22nd, the Sagehens defeated the Boxers of
Pacific University 19-18 in sudden death overtime.
The game started out well for the Sagehens. Quick movement, good
decision-making and excellent passing and shooting led to early
success. Although the defense struggled a bit with Pacific's
fast breaks, improved communication and teamwork allowed
Pomona-Pitzer to end the first half with a solid five-goal lead,
12-7.
The second half began in the Sagehen's favor, but a tired
squad was not able to hold on against the motivated Boxers. Pacific
gained momentum as they held possession and continued to score, led
by Kaitlyn Harper and Monica Smith, who each tallied five goals.
The score was within one point towards the end second half, and
Emma Molloy (PI '13) came through with the go-ahead goal
putting the Sagehens up 16-15 with little time remaining. Mistakes
by the Hens allowed Pacific to tie the score with nine seconds
remaining in the game.
The game then went to two three-minute overtimes. The score was
17-17 after the first overtime, and the Hens scored first in the
second overtime but failed to keep control of the ball. After
nearly two minutes of solid defense, Pacific was able to score with
nine seconds left. The two tired teams entered sudden death
overtime, in which great defensive plays to win possession of the
ball allowed the Sagehens to score with 1:49 left for an
exhilarating and well-deserved win.
Martha Marich led the Hens in scoring with 10 goals, while Hannah
T'Kindt, Jenny Miner and Emma Molloy each added three goals.
Kira Watson led in assists with three, and Julia
“Wallace” Behr had another strong performance in goal
with six saves. The Sagehens are confident that they will only keep
on improving and this exciting win shows just how much potential
the team has.
