On Monday March 15, the Pomona Pitzer Sagehens fell to the
Sewanee Tigers, 20-8.
In their fourth game of the season, the Sagehens were unable to
control the Tigers' fast break offensive attacks and had
trouble scoring against talented goalkeeping. The Tigers
managed to get a strong lead from the beginning and by the end of
the first period, they had a 13-5 lead.
The Sagehens began the second half with renewed energy but failed
to close the gap and the Tigers increased their lead. The
large Tennessee team was able to substitute players with 24 girls
getting playing time, while the Sagehens struggled to keep up their
energy under the hot sun with no substitutes.
The Tigers were able to control the ball offensively despite
mistakes on both sides, taking 32 shots in comparison to the
Sagehens' 19. Sewanee managed to control the majority
of the draws, getting 19 versus Pomona Pitzer's 11.
Sophomore Martha Marich had a typically strong performance with
six of the Sagehens' eight goals and three draws.
Senior Kira Watson and freshman Jenny Miner scored the remaining
two of Pomona-Pitzer's goals. Senior Devon Haynes also
came through with two assists, while freshman Emma Molloy had
one.
The Tigers had a number of strong performers including Molly
Arnold who had five goals, while Steffi Renninger and Victoria
Friedman each added three. Page Carpenter had seven assists and
Allison Bland had two goals and four assists.
Tiger goalies Theresa Monypeny and Amy Nusbaum had a total of 11
saves while Pomona Pitzer goalie Julia 'Wallace' Behr
made 12 saves.
