The Pomona Pitzer Sagehens put on a solid season opener Saturday
February 26th against cross-street rivals
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, despite three coaching changes in the last
four years since the transition from club to varsity status. The
skies were stormy, and rain and slippery terrain impacted the girls
throughout the contest. After a rocky start, with 17 minutes
to go in the first half, the Hens put some goals in the net,
closing the gap to three, 7-4. By halftime, the score was 5
to 12.
Coming out for the second half with their heads up, the Hens
were able to control the beginning of the second half, bringing the
score to within two goals. In spite of this, the Athenas
rallied, and the final score was 20-10.
Pomona-Pitzer sophomore Martha Marich scored a game-high seven
goals. Freshman Emma Molloy and junior Hannah T'Kindt combined for
the other three Sagehen goals. CMS player Sarah Dick had five
goals, while Colbi Brawne, Madi Shove and Jennifer Cohen scored
three goals apiece. Pomona-Pitzer goalie, Julia "Wallace" Behr had
an impressive first-ever performance with five saves. CMS goalie
Katie Campbell-Morrison, a veteran player, had six saves.
The Sagehens remain confident that they can build upon their
performance. There were brilliant moments on the field and this
game will serve as a jumping off point to what, this writer hopes,
will be an inspiring and successful season for the Sagehens.
