Whenever Pomona-Pitzer gears up to play their rivals from
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, a battle can be expected. The Pomona-Pitzer
Sagehens proved a formidable opponent but were unable to hold on to
early leads and fell 3-2 and 7-3.
In game one, senior captain Melanie Gularte (PI '10) took on her
younger sister in CMS starting pitcher Becca Gularte. A series of
walks allowed the Athenas to quickly gain the upper hand in the
first inning, 1-0. Pomona-Pitzer responded in the bottom of the
first when Alexis Garcia (PI '11) hit a sharp line drive up the
middle to bring in Carolyn Cross (PO '13).
On the mound the two sisters battled, preventing any more runs
until the bottom of the fourth when Kathryn Rabak (PO '13) began a
rally with a leadoff single to left field. Brianna Marcantoni (PI
'12) followed with her own shot to left and Emily Buika (PI '12)
reached on an error to load the bases. Jamie Goldberg (PO '11)
reached on a fielder's choice to bring in Rabak. An RBI double
allowed CMS to regain the lead in the fifth, 3-2. The Sagehens were
unable to answer and fell, 3-2.
In game two, CMS took control, putting one run on the
board in the first inning. Arianna Roach (PI '12) singled to start
off a Pomona-Pitzer rally in the bottom of the inning. Cross walked
and two batters later, Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to score Roach.
Cross scored on a wild pitch, putting the Sagehens up 2-1. An RBI
double in the third gave CMS another run and tied the game at 2. In
the third inning, the Sagehens responded when Ali Corley (PO '11)
scored on a single by Rabak. The bats fell silent for the Sagehens
after the third inning and the Athenas took control with three more
runs in the fourth and runs in both the fifth and the sixth
innings. The Hens were unable recover and lost 7-3.
