The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens opened their SCIAC
season Saturday taking on the La Verne Leopards in a double-header.
Although the teams proved to be evenly matched, the Sagehens fell,
5-3 and 7-5.
In game one, La Verne pulled ahead scoring one run in the third
inning on a failed pick-off attempt at third base. Pomona-Pitzer
responded in the fourth inning when Ali Corley (PO '11) hit a solo
homerun to tie the game. In the fifth inning, Emily Buika (PI
'12) started a Sagehen rally with a leadoff single. La Verne was
unable to throw Buika out at second on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie
Goldberg (PO '11). Buika and Goldberg moved into scoring position
on a passed ball, setting the stage for Alexis Garcia (PI '11).
Garcia drilled a single into right field to score Buika. Four hits
in the fifth inning enabled the Leopards to regain the lead at 3-2.
In the sixth inning, Susan Stahlman (PO '10) singled to shortstop,
scoring Brianna Marcantoni (PI '12) and tying the game at three.
The Leopards pulled ahead for good in the sixth inning and the
Sagehens were unable to respond.
La Verne again scored first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer was quick to retaliate as Marcantoni and Goldberg
both walked in the second and advanced to scoring position on a
groundout by Stahlman; Marcantoni scored on a wild pitch. With two
outs, Cat Ulrich (PO '12) walked to load the bases, setting the
stage for Garcia who drilled an RBI single up the middle. The
Sagehens then loaded the bases, walking Corley and Kathryn Rabak
(PO '13) to bring in two runs and give the Sagehens a 4-1 lead. In
the third inning, the Leopards closed the gap, scoring two more
runs and in the fifth, an RBI single to center field tied the game
at four. La Verne pulled ahead in the sixth with three more runs
and despite Carolyn Cross' (PO '13) solo homerun in the seventh, it
was not enough as the Sagehens fell, 7-5.
