PASADENA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated SCIAC opponent Caltech 22-3 on Saturday afternoon at Braun Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 18-10 overall and 9-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Brienz Lang who netted a game-high five goals in the win. Two other Sagehens registered hat-tricks as Gabby Lewis and Ayva Magna each had three. Kaylee Stigar found the back of the net twice while Sydney Bianchi, Madison Lewis, Mia Amberger, and Lauren Smith each had one.
The Sagehens scored within the first minute of the game against the Beavers as Amberger found the back of the net to get the Sagehens' scoring going. Smith followed Amberger with a goal to start with a 2-0 lead before Caltech responded to cut the lead down to 2-1 with just under six minutes left in the first. Lang, Stigar and Madison Lewis netted three-straight goals for the Sagehens before Caltech scored their second of the night, but the Sagehens ended the first with Lang's second of the day to take a 6-2 lead into the second quarter.
Lang earned her hat-trick in the opening moments of the second quarter followed by goals from Stigar, Magna, and Gabby Lewis to break the game open at 10-2 with 5:22 left before halftime. Lang continued to find the back of the net throughout the first half with her fourth of the day while Magna and Gabby Lewis both added their second of the game to put the Sagehens on top 13-3 heading into halftime.
Gabby Lewis and Magna earned their hat-tricks straight out of halftime while Lang and Bianchi added two more in the third as the defense shutout the Beavers in the third to take a 17-3 lead into the fourth.
After taking a commanding 14-point lead, Pomona-Pitzer continued to add goals in the fourth. The Sagehens found the net five more times in the fourth with goals from Magna, Gabby Lewis, and McGowan as the Sagehens left Pasadena with the win.
