CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team improved their win streak to 10 games with their 19-9 win over Whittier College on Wednesday night at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 20-10 overall and 11-0 in SCIAC play.
Alexandra Szczerba had the only hat-trick for the Sagehens with a team-high three goals in the win while Abigail Wiesenthal, Madison Lewis, Namlhun Jachung, and Brienz Lang all had multi-goal games with two each while Sydney Bianchi, Kaylee Stigar, Ayva Magna, Mia Amberger, Bella McGowan and Paulina Correa had one. Zosia Amberger started in goal and got the win with four saves while McGowan came in for four saves as well.
The Sagehens struck first with a goal from Wiesenthal in front of the cage and followed up with another from Lang off of a five-meter penalty to take an early 2-0 advantage at home. Pomona-Pitzer continued to grow its lead in the first quarter as Szczerba, Stigar, and Jachung all found the back of the net to make it 5-0 before the Poets scored their first of the night to make it 5-1 with just under two minutes to play in the opening quarter. The Sagehens responded and ended the first with a goal from Jachung with her second of the night to take a 6-1 lead into quarter number two.
The Poets started the scoring in the second with an opening goal, but the Sagehens came back with Szczerba's second of the game followed by Bianchi's first to extend the lead to 8-2. Whittier closed the first half with a goal to cut into the lead, but the Sagehens still held a sizeable lead at 8-3 heading into halftime.
Wiesenthal and Szczerba got the Sagehens going out of halftime with opening goals in the third before Whittier netted their fourth to make it 10-4 with 6:05 left to play in the third. Gaither followed with back-to-back goals in rapid fashion for the Sagehens while Madison Lewis, Lang, and Mia Amberger put the Sagehens up 15-5 heading into the fourth.
With the game well in hand, the Sagehens and Poets each netted four goals in the fourth. Madison Lewis, Correa, McGowan and Magna all scored goals in the final quarter as the Sagehens continued their unbeaten SCIAC streak.
