LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team down SCIAC opponent La Verne 17-10 behind a seven-goal game from Abigail Wiesenthal on Saturday afternoon at Las Flores Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 19-10 overall and stay perfect in conference play boasting a 10-0 SCIAC record.
Wiesenthal led the Sagehens with a game-high seven goals while Lulu Gaither also netted a hat-trick with three. Ayva Magna and Mia Amberger also had multi-goal games with two apiece while Sydney Bianchi, Kaylee Stigar, and Namlhun Jachung had one.
The Sagehens had a consistent attack against the Leopards that saw them score five goals in each of the first three periods. La Verne started out with the game's first goal to take their only lead of the day. The Sagehens responded with four straight from Gaither, Jachung, Wiesenthal, and Magna to take a 4-1 lead while Magna ended the first with another to give the Sagehens a 5-2 lead into the second.
Pomona-Pitzer also netted four straight goals to open the second and after Wiesenthal, Gaither, Bianchi and Stigar all found the back of the net, blew the game open with a 9-2 lead with five minutes left before halftime. Wiesenthal went on to complete her hat-trick in the later stages of the first half to help the Sagehens to a 10-5 lead at the half.
Wiesenthal netted three of the five goals for Pomona-Pitzer in the third as she continued to give the Leopards problems from in front of the cage. Gaither and Amberger also notched goals in the third period to put the Sagehens up 15-7 heading into the final quarter.
Wiesenthal ended her career day in the fourth with another goal for good measure while Amberger tacked on one more as well as the Sagehens cruised to victory in their final away SCIAC contest of the year.
