THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated SCIAC opponent Cal Lutheran 17-13 on Wednesday night at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 16-10 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Lulu Gaither who scored a game-high five goals in the win. Alexandra Szczerba and Mia Amberger also netted hat-tricks with three goals apiece while Namlhun Jachung had two and Sydney Bianchi, Abigail Wiesenthal, Madison Lewis, and Brienz Lang scored one. Zosia Amberger got the win for the Sagehens with seven saves and five steals.
Pomona-Pitzer wasted no time building its lead over Cal Lutheran as Wiesenthal and Gaither got the Sagehens out to a 2-0 lead before the Regals netted their first goal of the game to make it 2-1. The Sagehens went on to net three more from Szczerba, Jachung, and Bianchi before the Regals ended the first with a goal to make it 5-2 heading into the second period.
The Sagehens also started with the first two goals of the second from Szczerba and Gaither to make it a five-goal game at 7-2. Gaither, Lang, and Szczerba all netted goals in the second period with Pomona-Pitzer taking a 10-4 lead into halftime.
Cal Lutheran matched the Sagehens with four goals in the third in a high-scoring period out of halftime. Jachung, Gaither, and Amberger got the Sagehens on the board in the third as they maintained their six-goal lead heading into the fourth up 14-8.
The Regals made it a four-goal game at 14-10 but Gaither and Amberger ended any chance of a comeback for Cal Lutheran with back-to-back goals to put Pomona-Pitzer up 16-10 with just over two minutes to play. Lewis finished the high-scoring night for the Sagehens with a goal in the closing minutes as Pomona-Pitzer continued their unbeaten streak in SCIAC play.
