Sagehens Leave Redlands With 16-6 Win

REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team came away with a 16-6 win against SCIAC foe Redlands on Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatics Center.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 15-10 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens were led by Namlhun Jachung who went for a game-high five goals in the win. Alexandra Szczerba finished just one behind Jachung with four while Abigail Wiesenthal netted two and Kaylee Stigar, Ayva Magna, Gabby Lewis, Mia Amberger and Paulina Correa had one. Zosia Amberger picked up the win in the cage with six saves and a steal.

The Sagehens got on top early with goals from Jachung, Szczerba and Wiesenthal to take ab early 3-0 lead in the first.  Redlands answered with its first goal of the game, but the Sagehens fired back with another goal from Szczerba to make it 4-1.  The Bulldogs stayed with the Sagehens early as the ended the first with a goal to cut the Sagehens' lead down to two heading into the second quarter. 

Szczerba netted her hat-trick goal with the first goal of the second quarter to make it 5-2. Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer exchanged scores with Magna netting her first goal of the day to put the Sagehens up 6-3 with 3:49 left until halftime. The Sagehens added two more goals before halftime as Szczerba scored off a five-meter penalty and Wiesenthal found the back of the next to make it 9-3, but Redlands got one goal back just before halftime as the Sagehens took a 9-4 lead into halftime.

Jachung opened the scoring in the second half with three-straight goals for Pomona-Pitzer as they continued to build their lead over the Bulldogs.  Gabby Lewis, Mia Amberger and Kaylee Stigar got on the board in the third quarter as the Sagehens took a commanding 15-4 lead over Redlands into the fourth.

After going down by double digits, Redlands netted the first two goals of the fourth to cut the lead down to 15-6, but the Sagehens did deposit one goal into the back of the net in the fourth as Correa ended the game with a goal as the Sagehens continued their unbeaten streak in SCIAC play.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, March 29th at 4:00 p.m.
