Three Sagehens Net Hat-Tricks In 14-7 Win Over CSU Fullerton

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team defeated Cal State Fullerton 14-7 in game two of their doubleheader Saturday at Haldeman Pool.

Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 13-10 overall.

The Sagehens had three players net hat-tricks as Abigail Wiesenthal, Alexandra Szczerba, and Mia Amberger all shared a game-high three goals in the win. Namlhun Jachung also had multiple goals with two and Sydney Bianchi, Kaylee Stigar, and Madison Lewis had one. Zosia Amberger earned her second win of the day with eight saves and three steals against the Titans.

Pomona-Pitzer got on the board first off of a five-meter penalty conversion by Szczerba and then a first-time shot by Wisenthal to take a 2-0 lead over the Titans in the first. Fullerton answered with a goal in front of the cage to cut the lead down to 2-1 but the Sagehens answered as the Amberger family combined for a goal at the end of the first to take a 3-1 lead into the second.

The Titans scored the first goal of the second quarter off of a spinning backhand shot to get within one of the Sagehens' lead at 3-2 and went on to tie the game at 3-3 with 5:18 left before halftime.  The Sagehens reclaimed their lead with a goal from Wiesenthal and then back-to-back goals from Jachung and Wiesenthal again put the Sagehens up 6-3 with 41 seconds before halftime. Fullerton responded with a goal, but the Sagehens added one more just before halftime off of the hand of Lewis to take a 7-4 lead at the break.

The Titans came out of halftime with the first goal of the second half to come back within two goals at 7-5 but the Sagehens continued to keep their distance with goals from Szczerba, and Amberger to keep the lead at three with a 10-7 advantage heading into the fourth.

The Pomona-Pitzer defense stepped up in the fourth quarter after they shut out Fullerton in the final eight minutes. Jachung opened the fourth with a goal followed by Stigar to make it 12-7 with a minute gone in the fourth.  The Sagehens continued to pull away with goals from Amberger and Bianchi as Pomona-Pitzer came away with two wins at home on Saturday.
