Box Score REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team won a 77-73 battle against SCIAC foe Redlands on Saturday night at Currier Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improve to 15-5 overall and 10-1 in SCIAC play and firm up their No. 1 spot in the SCIAC regular season standings.
The Sagehens were led by Brendan Mora who went for 25 points and eight rebounds in the win. Ty Bergman also put up big numbers with 20 points and 3 rebounds for the double-double while Pete Boyle had 10 and Joe Cookson added 8 in the win.
Pomona-Pitzer shot 52.6% from the field including 38.5% from three. The Sagehens outrebounded Redlands 40-33 and scored 48 points in the paint while holding Redlands to just 34 downlow.
Pomona-Pitzer controlled the game for the majority of the first half and took a 15-7 lead early after a made layup by Mora with just under six minutes gone in the first half. The Sagehens went up by 10 after an Owen Avdalovic three at 20-10, but Redlands started to chip away at the lead and cut the deficit to five points down 24-19. The Sagehens regrouped and maintained their first half lead up six at the break at 37-31.
The Sagehens went up by 10 early in the second half but the Bulldogs quickly erased the Sagehen lead and went on a 17-6 run to take a 48-47 lead over Pomona-Pitzer with 14:23 to play. Pomona-Pitzer stopped the Bulldog run and got back on top to reclaim the lead and kept Redlands just out of striking distance for the next 10 minutes of play.
Redlands had chances late to tie the game and even take the lead as they were down only two points at 69-67 with 3:07 remaining in the game, but the Sagehens played solid defense late and was able to close the game out at the free-throw line to come away with a huge win on the road.
