Sagehens Split Day One Of Bruno Tournament

PROVIDENCE, RI. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team split in day one of the Bruno Tournament with a 17-5 win over Sienna and a 10-5 loss to No. 25 Brown at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday morning.

Season Impact: With the split, the Sagehens move to 3-3 overall.

Sagehens 17, Siena 5

The Sagehens were led by Paulina Correa and Mia Amberger who each scored a hat-trick in the win. Ayva Magna and Alexandra Szczerba both scored two while Abigail Wiesenthal, Kaylee Stigar, Gabby Lewis, Namlhun Jachung, Brienz Lang, Lauren Smith and Lulu Gaither all added one.

Pomona-Pitzer got out to a great start against Siena and shut out the Saints in the first quarter and netted seven of their own. The Sagehens started with a goal from Gaither inside the first 20 seconds of the match and started to pile no goals in the first after Wiesenthal, Szczerba, Lewis, Magna, Amberger, and Lang joined the scoresheet to put the Sagehens up big heading into the second quarter. 

The Sagehens kept the offense flowing in the early stages of the second quarter after Magna added her second of the game to make it 8-0, but Sienna finally got on the board with a goal to make it 8-1 with just over a minute gone in the second quarter. Smith went on to net another for the Sagehens to make it 9-1 before the Saints added their second goal of the game to cut the lead down to 9-2. Szczerba closed the half for the Sagehens with their 10th goal of the first half to make it 10-2 at the break.

Amberger opened up the second half with a goal, but Sienna netted back-to-back goals to make it 11-4. Correa went on to score her first two goals of the season while Amberger added her second of the quarter to take a 14-4 lead into the fourth.

The Sagehens outscored Sienna 3-1 in the fourth with goals from Jachung, Stigar, and Correa as Pomona-Pitzer opened up with a big win at the Bruno Tournament.

Sagehens 5, Brown 10

The Sagehens were led by Szczerba who netted two goals in the loss while Jachung, Brienz Lang, and Lauren Smith each added one as well to their total.

The Sagehens got out on top against Brown in their home pool as Jachung netted the first goal of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The Sagehens doubled the lead with a goal from Szczerba, but the Bears came back with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2 right at the end of the first quarter.

Brown took the lead with their third-straight goal midway through the second quarter and then added another by way of a powerplay to make it 4-2 deep into the first half. The Bears continued their goal streak as a shot just trickled over the line for their fifth-straight of the first half. The Sagehens had a chance late with an exclusion to end the first half but were unable to take advantage as the Bears went into halftime with a 5-2 lead.

The Sagehens scored first coming out of halftime after Lang scored to break the scoreless drought to make it 5-3. Brown Responded with a goal shortly after but followed by another goal by Smith to cut the lead down to 6-4. Brown started to pull away after they ended the third with three-straight goals to take a 9-4 lead into the fourth. 

Each team netted one goal in the fourth as Szczerba added another for Pomona-Pitzer but the Sagehens couldn't overcome the Bears' goal streak in the first half as the Sagehens moved to 1-1 in day one of the Bruno Tournament. 

Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to Harvard to take on St. Francis and Harvard to end the Bruno Tournament on Sunday.
