IRVINE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell to No. 1 ranked Stanford 21-3 on the opening match of the Barbara Kalbus Tournament on Friday morning at the Anteater Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 4-5 overall.
Pomona-Pitzer had three different goalscorers as Kaylee Stigar, Alexandra Szczerba, and Brienz Lang all found the back of the net against the Cardinal.
Up against a tough opponent to start the Barbara Kalbus Tournament with the Sagehens facing the No. 1 team in Division I and had their hands full early. Stanford opened the game with a 6-0 run before Lang scored the first goal for the Sagehens late in the first quarter.
The Sagehens actually matched Stanford goal for goal in the second quarter after both teams scored two apiece. Szczerba netted her goal to make it two in a row for the Sagehens and Stigar ended the half with a goal to make it just a five-goal deficit at 8-3 heading into halftime.
However, the second half was all Stanford after the Cardinal put up nine goals in the third and four goals in the fourth while holding the Sagehens scoreless in the second half.
