Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team came away with a 75-67 win over Cal Lutheran on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improve to 19-5 overall and 14-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens had all five starters in double-digits and leading the way was Joe Cookson who went for 20 points and 6 rebounds. Ty Bergman had 13 points, Pete Boyle and Brendan Mora both shared 12 and Hayden Moser went for 11.
Pomona-Pitzer shot 50-50-50 in today's game with 50% from the floor, 50% from three and unfortunately 50% from the free-throw line. The Sagehens also controlled the boards 37-28 and committed just 12 turnovers in the win.
The Sagehens beat the Cal Lutheran press early on and started the game with two-straight threes by Moser to take a slight advantage over Cal Lutheran at 11-8 at the first media timeout with 15:56 left in the first half. The Kingsmen made a run to take the lead and go up 22-13, but the Sagehens battled back and got it even at 28-28 after a Boyle three with 5:43 left until halftime. The two teams went back and forth to end the first half, but Mora's and-one put the Sagehens up 35-33 at the break.
Pomona-Pitzer extended its lead early in the second half up 42-35 within the first four minutes. The Sagehens stayed ahead for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the Kingsmen pulled ahead at 50-47 after a made three. Cookson responded with a three of his own to make it 50-50 and the Sagehens started to make their run to stay on top late in the second half. Big baskets by Cookson, Mora, and Moser gave the Sagehens a 64-58 lead late in the second half and forced Cal Lutheran to try to shoot back into the game. The Kingsmen went cold from three late in the game and a three bv Boyle and a statement dunk by Bergman put a bow on the victory as the Sagehens set up a Sixth Street Rivalry showdown for the SCIAC Regular Season Title.
Up Next: The Sagehens will next host CMS on Tuesday, February 21st at 7:00 p.m. with the winner taking the No. 1 seed in the SCIAC Tournament.
