Box Score CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team totaled a season-high 115 points in their blowout win over SCIAC opponent Whittier on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens win their fourth-straight conference game and improve to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by Brendan Mora with 22 points who was perfect from the field at 9-9 and 3-3 from three. Joe Cookson landed one rebound shy of a triple-double with a 20, 10, and 9 game while Pete Boyle added 17 points in the win. The Sagehens had three more players in double-digits: Ty Bergman with 13, Owen Avdalovic with 13, and Hayden Moser with 11.
The Sagehens had an incredible night shooting as they ended with season-high numbers from the field and from three, hitting 62.9% from the field and 51.9% from three. The Sagehens also outrebounded the Poets 51-25 and outscored them in the paint 48-8.
The Sagehens literally did not miss to open up the game after they were 9-9 to start the game with four made threes. The Sagehens took a 22-11 lead after the first media timeout shooting 100% from the field. Pomona-Pitzer kept their perfect streak going at 10-10 from the field after a jumper by Cookson but Whittier kept responding and kept it reasonably close at 24-14 with 12:31 to play before halftime.
Some early turnovers kept Whittier around in the first half, but the Sagehen defense clamped down and limited the Poets to just two points in the next five minutes to extend the lead to 30-16 at the under-eight-minute media timeout.
Pomona-Pitzer easily played its best half of the season after they went into the locker room shooting 73.5% from the field and 54.5% from three for a season-best 58 points in the first half for a 58-39 lead at halftime.
It was more of the same for the Sagehens in the second half after they nearly matched their 58 points with 57 in the second half. A Boyle three put the Sagehens up over the 20-mark at 66-44 with 16:45 to play, but the Sagehens couldn't miss tonight against the Poets after they extended the lead to over 30 for the first time at 82-51 with a pair of made free throws by Moser just before the midway point of the second half.
Pomona-Pitzer still extended their lead over the Poets and got it to over 40 as the Sagehens crossed the 100-point mark after a Ben Daugherty layup made it 100-59. The Sagehens were able to cruise to their eighth SCIAC win and took sole possession of first place after their statement win over Whittier at home.
