Sagehens Fall To San Diego State And UCSD To End Opening Weekend

SANTA BARBARA, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team dropped their final two games of the UCSB Winter Invite with a 9-8 loss to San Diego State and a 13-2 loss to UC San Diego on Sunday afternoon.

Season Impact: With the losses, the Sagehens fall to 2-2 to open their season.

Pomona-Pitzer 8, San Diego State 9

The Sagehens were led by Abigail Wiesenthal and Namlhun Jachung who shared a team-high two goals in the loss while Madison Lewis, Alexandra Szczerba, Mia Amberger, and Lulu Gaither had one.

The Sagehens got on top early against the Aztecs after they netted the first four goals of the first. Lewis, Szczerba, and Gaither got the Sagehens up 3-0 that forced San Diego State to call a timeout. The Sagehens ended the first with two of the last three goals by Wiesenthal and Jachung to take a 5-1 lead into the second.

Pomona-Pitzer took their largest lead of the game at 6-1 after another goal by Jachung, but San Diego State started to chip away at the lead with three-straight goals to make it 6-4 with 5:32 left in the third. Amberger broke the scoring drought to extend the lead to 7-4, but the Aztecs scored another streak of three straight to tie the game at 7-7 with five minutes left in the fourth. Wiesenthal put the Sagehens up one with 4:23 remaining, but SDSU tied the game at 8-8 with 2:28 left in the fourth. The Sagehens had a few chances to take the lead, but the Aztecs went on to take their first lead of the game at 9-8 with 17 seconds to go.  The Sagehens had a chance to tie late but the shot was deflected as the Aztecs handed the Sagehens their first loss of the season.

Pomona-Pitzer 2, UC San Diego 13

The Sagehens were led by Sydney Bianchi and Wiesenthal who each had a goal in the loss.

UCSD jumped out on top over the Sagehens early in the first with the first four goals of the game to take a 4-0 lead in the first. Pomona-Pitzer was shutout in the first quarter but found their first goal of the game from Wiesenthal to make it 5-1. UCSD tacked on a few more in the second and took a 7-1 lead over Pomona-Pitzer into halftime.

Pomona-Pitzer scored their only other goal of the game in the fourth as Bianchi found the back of the net, but the Sagehens fell to the Tritons 13-2.

Up Next: The Sagehens will next head to the Bruno Tournament on Saturday, February 4th with games against Siena and Brown.
